Rising Shortstop Makes Yankees History and Is on the Brink of Even More

MLB

Anthony Volpe has a chance to solidify himself amongst the Yankee greats in just his second year in the big leagues. On Tuesday, May 28th, Volpe hit a single in the second inning, extending his incredible hit streak to 20 games. With this hit, the young shortstop surpassed Derek Jeter’s longest hit streak ever at 19 games. The 20-game hitting streak is also the longest by a Yankee since Robinson Cano in 2012.

At the age of 23, Volpe has surpassed every Yankee 23 or under for the longest-hitting streak, besides one. The sole survivor is Joe DiMaggio, who collected two impressive hit streaks in the 1937 season. Volpe has tied his shorter hit streak at 20 games and looks to catch DiMaggio’s record of 22 straight. To do so, Volpe would have to stay hot on the West Coast, with two more games in Los Angeles against the Angels to tie the record and one in San Francisco against the Giants for the lead.

Volpe has been incredible for the Yankees this season, starting the season on fire and showing major consistency during this stretch. On his hitting streak, Volpe has increased his average from .258 to .285 and scored 15 times. With Juan Soto and Aaron Judge behind him in the lineup, Volpe getting on base has been a major factor in the Yankees’ early season success. Judge commented on his performance, saying, “What Volpe is doing out of the leadoff spot has been incredible. It’s fun to watch. As he gets more at-bats under his belt, he’ll continue to improve.” Volpe has already made a huge step up from last season, all while continuing to steal bases and field at gold-glove caliber, answering every Yankees fan’s wishes. With more improvement and consistency, Volpe looks to continue his hot stretch to move up farther on Yankees record lists.
