Two Stars Returning to the Big East

The past week in the College Basketball world has been nothing short of exhilarating for an off-season. With many big names entering the transfer portal and declaring for the 2024 NBA Draft, questions would arise for many players. In terms of the two giants in the Big East, they have heard great news. The reigning National Champion UConn Huskies were delighted to hear Alex Karaban would return to Storrs, Connecticut for another year. The upcoming second-round Draft prospect had a major decision to make, where he would ultimately believe a three-peat is in the cards for Dan Hurley’s squad. On the other hand, Creighton received the news that their star guard Steven Ashworth will be using his additional year of eligibility. The news for both programs is massive, knowing the Big East next season will be one of the best conferences in the nation.

Two Stars Returning to the Big East

What this means for Connecticut is that they will have a two-time National Champion returning with experience for the young class. With Karaban’s veteran presence, this will keep UConn poised to make another run at the title. Through his career, Karaban is 16-1 in the postseason and a vital part of the Huskies offense. This past year, the Massachusetts native averaged 13.3 PPG, while shooting 39% from beyond the arch. The high hopes for Karaban have him ready for a potential First-Team All-Big East selection during the upcoming season. He will be the anchor for one the the top teams in the country, while already knowing Hurley’s system. The Three-peat is on in Storrs, with a vengeance to create a dynasty.

Ashworth on Creighton’s Future

Earlier in the week, Steven Ashworth decided another year in Omaha would be sufficient in trying to fill the trophy case for the Blue Jays. After suffering a tough loss to Tennessee in the Sweet Sixteen, the revenge and hunger for Creighton is there. The ex-Utah State transfer found a home in Nebraska and believes that they have what it takes next year to return to the NCAA Tournament. Ashworth averaged 11.1 PPG, and 4.2 APG while shooting 90% from the charity stripe. Another veteran presence from Ashworth will bring this team to new heights, in their hopes of knocking off UConn for the top dog in the Big East Conference. The calmness that Ashworth holds, with his clutch shot making will be a huge difference late in the year. With the reigning Big East Defensive Player of the Year, Ryan Kalkbrenner also returning to Creighton, do not be shocked if the Blue Jays can make some noise come March.
