Rockies Unable to Overcome Phillies in Latest Battle

MLB

The Philadelphia Phillies continued their strong start to the season with a 4-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies on April 2, 2025, at Citizens Bank Park. Phillies' Zack Wheeler put on an outstanding performance, striking out ten batters over seven innings while keeping runs to a minimum of one on three hits with no walks. Wheeler's precision on the mound put pressure on the Rockies’ offense, marking his second consecutive strong start to the season. The Phillies’ offense provided him with early support on runs, taking advantage of Rockies’ starter Kyle Freeland’s struggle to create scoring opportunities. With this win, the Phillies improved 4-1 on the season, while the Rockies dropped to 1-4 as they continue to look for offensive consistency.

On the offensive side, Edmundo Sosa and Trea Turner led the charge for Philadelphia, each recording three hits. Sosa, who has been on a hot streak this season, extended his multi-hit game streak to four with an important two-run double in the eighth inning that supported the Phillies’ lead. Turner showed his usual sharpness at the plate and consistently found ways to get on base to put pressure on Colorado’s defense. Meanwhile, Bryce Harper contributed with a sacrifice fly in the third inning which gave the Phillies an early advantage. For the Rockies, their bright light came from Hunter Goodman, who hit a solo home run in the seventh inning, marking his second straight game homer. However, Colorado struggled to have any significant offensive momentum with the pressure from Wheeler and the Phillies’.

Kyle Freeland, the Rockies’ starter, pitched six and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out three and walking none. Despite a rocky fifth inning, he found himself stuck with bases loaded and no outs. Freeland managed to escape without surrendering any runs by striking out two key batters and pitching a groundout. However, his efforts were not enough to keep the Phillies at bay for long. The Phillies were led by Matt Strahm and José Alvarado, who came together for two scoreless innings to shut the door on the Colorado Rockies’ comeback hopes. With this loss, the Rockies look to bounce back and avoid a series sweep in the final game of the series on Thursday.
