Rodgers Hits New Low After An Embarrassing 40-14 Loss to Buffalo Bills

NFL

The New York Jets hit a new low in Week 17 as the Buffalo Bills handed them an embarrassing 40-14 loss at Highmark Stadium. Aaron Rodgers struggled uncharacteristically, completing just 12 of 18 passes for 112 yards and throwing two interceptions, marking his lowest yardage total since 2019. Rodgers’ performance was marked by four sacks, including one for a safety, setting a new record and surpassing Tom Brady to become the most-sacked quarterback in NFL history. The game exposed a season filled with missed opportunities and poor execution for the 41-year-old quarterback and the Jets offense.

The Jets’ battered offensive line added to the challenges Rodgers faced throughout the game. Morgan Moses exited early with a knee injury, leaving Carter Warren to fill in, while Max Mitchell started at left tackle in place of the injured Olu Fashanu. The lack of protection resulted in endless pressure from the Bills defense, with Rodgers unable to sustain drives and the Jets failing to score during his three quarters on the field. The Jets managed no points and struggled to convert in the red zone before Rodgers was replaced by backup Tyrod Taylor early in the fourth quarter.

Tyrod Taylor provided a spark after replacing Rodgers with the Jets trailing 40-0. Taylor led two scoring drives, including a nine-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson and another to tight end Tyler Conklin. Wilson also achieved a significant milestone, becoming the first player in franchise history to record 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first three seasons. Taylor's ability to generate some offensive life after Rodgers struggled for three quarters only emphasized the issues with Rodgers’ performance. It raised more questions about his leadership and future in New York.

The Jets’ lack of discipline was another issue, as they committed 16 penalties for 120 yards, tying the third-most in franchise history. These penalties interrupted any offensive rhythm and extended opportunities for the Bills. This marked their highest penalty count since a 2018 game against the Packers, highlighting the team's ongoing struggles with consistency and focus. Meanwhile, Buffalo’s victory secured the two seed in the AFC playoff picture, allowing them to potentially rest key players heading into Week 18. Quarterback Josh Allen threw for 182 yards, two touchdowns, and added a rushing touchdown, all in just three quarters. Allen also became the first player in NFL history to record five consecutive seasons with 40 total touchdowns, cementing his status as an MVP candidate.

This game symbolized the Jets’ disappointing season, a team with high expectations that fell far short. Rodgers acknowledged the loss, saying the team had let too many games slip away, with this one being no different. As the Jets head into Week 18 against the Dolphins, questions remain about whether Rodgers will play to achieve his 500th regular-season touchdown or sit out the season finale. Additionally, uncertainty continues over his future and whether he will return to lead the Jets in 2025.
