Royals Put on A Ridiculous Comeback in Win over the Mariners
Both the Seattle Mariners and the Kansas City Royals have recorded similar records this season. Seattle is 36-29 and leads the AL West by five games, while Kansas City is 38-26 and trails the Cleveland Guardians by three games in the AL Central division. During the first game of a three-game series, the action and competitiveness between these two teams were on full display. After trailing 8-0 after the top of the fourth inning, the Royals put on a ridiculous 10-9 comeback win over the Mariners. The final two games of this series should be extremely enticing, as both teams look to ramp up their play before the MLB All-Star break.
At the top of the first inning, Mariners designated hitter Mitch Garver got the game’s first run with an RBI walk. The next batter, right fielder Mitch Haniger ripped a three-run double near the right-center field wall giving Seattle a quick 4-0 lead. One batter later, left fielder Víctor Robles lined an RBI double to left-center field. Two batters later, second baseman Ryan Bliss crushed his first career home run to left field. Seattle now had a 7-0 lead after one inning of play. A few innings later at the top of the fourth, Mariners first baseman Ty France hit an RBI ground-rule double giving Seattle an eight-run lead. Kansas City would finally get on the scoreboard when designated hitter Nelson Velazquez slapped an RBI infield single to Mariners third baseman Dylan Moore, who could not hold onto the ball. The next batter, Royals left fielder MJ Melendez smacked a three-run home run to right field cutting Seattle’s lead in half.
Garver got himself another RBI after hooking a run-scoring double at the top of the sixth inning. A half inning later, Melendez hit an RBI groundout to make it a 9-5 ball game. The next batter left fielder Hunter Renfroe, thrashed a two-run single to center field. Seattle now only held a two-run lead with three innings of action left to go. Kansas City could not score during the seventh or the eighth inning, so it all came down to the bottom of the ninth inning. Royals third baseman Maikel Garcia hit an RBI groundout making it a 9-8 game. Then, one batter later, shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. pummeled the game-tying triple down the left-field line. Velazquez hit into a fielder’s choice, but this would send Witt Jr. home, giving the Royals the ridiculous 10-9 comeback, and walk-off victory.
Royals starting pitcher Daniel Lynch IV pitched four innings allowing eight runs on six hits, and four walks while striking out four. MJ Melendez went one for three with four RBIs in the Royals win. Mariners starter Bryce Miller pitched five innings allowing seven runs on six hits and three walks while striking out just one batter. Mitch Haniger went one for four with three RBIs in the loss. The Royals have looked since the beginning of the season to make a resurgence, and they’ve certainly done that in not only last night’s win but during the first two and a half months of the season.
