The Giants Have Another Downfall in Washington

NFL

The New York Football Giants could have had a better day on their first road game of the season. This week was another week of losses for the team. The final score of this game was 18 to 21 after the Commanders kicked a field goal in the last few moments. The team had it together for this week's game. The team was in sync and got the ball moving down the field. The Giants scored a total of two touchdowns during the game. However, key things happened during today's game that made the Giants finish the way they did.

Despite the outcome, Daniel Jones and others were standout players today. His connection with Malik Nabers was a sight to behold. Nabers, in particular, was a force to be reckoned with, catching 10 passes out of 18 targets and gaining a total of 127 receiving yards. His performance today, along with Jones', gives us hope for their future games. However, one play stood out, Nabers dropped the ball after a 100-yard throw from Jones. This play cost the Giants the game, among a few other minor things.

Other decisions were made that came back to bite the Giants. The first one was that the Giants did not call up their kicker from the practice squad. Graham Gano was out of this game because he received an injury during the very first place of the game when Washington scored, and a penalty overturned it. Jamie Gillan was the only one available on the Giants roster for today other than Gano. That said, Gillan's kicks were not on target, and he missed the extra point after the Giants’ first touchdown of the game.

Following the issue with the kickers in today's game, the defensive line both had it together and didn’t. The Giants' defense was more bad than good. The team deserves credit for keeping Washington out of scoring any touchdowns, and you would think that a team that forces their opponent to make multiple field goals and out of the end zone would mean that they had a pretty great day. This was not the case. The Giants also deserve credit for sacking Jayden Daniels. The defense once again allowed their opposing team to get by. The Commanders rushed for 215 yards on 25 carries. They didn’t force Washington to punt for the entire game. It was not a good look for them. The worst part was that Washington scored their field goal only moments after Nabers had dropped the ball in the previous play. If the defense had performed better than they did, they should have been able to get the ball back before the game came to a close.

All around, the Giants did okay. It was not how it was expected to play out. However, their defense is not up to par and needs to be looked into before next weekend's game. The Giants will return next Sunday to play against the Cleveland Browns. The schedule for this team does not get any easier from here on out.
