The New York Football Giants Sign Running Back Joshua Kelley

NFL

The New York Football Giants have continued to make roster moves. They have spent the week adding to and releasing from the 90-man roster they carry, and that trend has continued into today. The Giants added a new man to the team, Joshua Kelley. Another great asset that the Giants have just added on as a backup.

This 26-year-old running back was the Los Angeles Chargers' fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. He appeared in 54 games, including four starts. His four-year career with the Chargers added up. Kelly rushed for 1,148 yards and six touchdowns. He averaged out to 3.6 yards per carry. He has also hauled 50 receptions for 319 yards.

With how he plays, Kelley is considered to be more of an in-between person. He succeeds in getting through with contact balance and technique rather than making the big plays on the field, which is something that the Giants definitely need. Playing this way with the Giants may earn him a spot to play on the starting field with the starters.

In addition to his offensive performance, Kelley has filled multiple roles. He has played on special teams and returned kickoffs. However, he could be more effective in this role. He would be much better with jumping and playing the backfield for New York. If Devin Singletary goes out, Kelley can slide in and take over. It wouldn’t be explosive, but it would still help move the ball down the field with the smaller runs he may carry.

The Giants needed a running back due to where this position stands. After Monday, Tyrone Tracy Jr. went out with an ankle injury, and the position looked thinner and unfilled. Dante Miller has been dealing with tightness in his lower legs. The Giants have other running backs that they can use this season, such as Singletary, Eric Gray, and Lorenzo Lingard, who was signed to the team earlier this week. It’s good that the Giants signed Kelley with how shorthanded they are. However, With the Giants signing this new running back to the roster, they have had to waive defensive  Elijah Reilly to make space for him.
