Three NFL Coaches That Are Currently Out of a Job

NFL

Since the NFL regular season ended this past Sunday, many non-playoff teams are looking toward the future. Some went to the extent of firing their head coach or general manager due to their poorly disappointing performance during the 2023 season. These teams will now make a collective and conscientious decision on who they will hire next, in order to succeed to the fullest extent. We’ll take a look at three NFL coaches who were let go this past week.

Ron Rivera

After topping the Panthers franchise all-time record with four playoff appearances, a Super Bowl appearance, and a record of 79-67-1, Ron Rivera became the 30th head coach of the Washington Commanders on January 1st, 2020. Since leading the then Washington Football Team, now Commanders, Ron has put up a 26-40-1 record, with one playoff appearance in 2020 since being named coach of Washington. On Monday, it was announced that Rivera was fired, as new ownership of the team is looking for a culture change, and a move or draft pick that would put them in the right direction. Overall, he’s 102-103-2 as a head coach with a 3-5 postseason record. He’s been named NFL Coach of the Year twice in 2013, and 2015, when he led the Panthers to Super Bowl 50.

Mike Vrabel

On January 20th, 2018, the Tennessee Titans named Mike Vrabel as their head coach, signing him to a five-year deal. Although they would miss the 2018 playoffs, Vrabel and the Titans would make three straight playoff appearances. During the 2019 playoffs, Tennessee reached the AFC Championship Game but lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 35-24. On January 9th, following a rough 6-11 2023 season, Mike was let go by the Titans. He’s put up a 54-45 record with the Titans and a 2-3 record during the postseason. He was named the NFL Coach of the Year in 2021 after helping Tennessee reach their best record in ten-plus years. Vrabel will certainly get another opportunity to coach, but the big question now is where?

Pete Carroll

Since being hired as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks on January 8th, 2010, Pete Carroll has done some tremendous work with the organization. He’s become the winningest coach in the organization and brought Seattle its first Super Bowl championship during the 2013 NFL season in a dominating victory over the Denver Broncos 43-8. The next year, they would make their second consecutive Super Bowl appearance but would fall to the New England Patriots 28-24. Overall, Carroll has a 137-69-1 record with the Seahawks. He’s brought the team to the playoffs 10 out of his 14 seasons with the team, five straight playoff appearances from 2012-2016. Overall, he has a head coaching record of 170-120-1, and although he’s never been named an NFL Coach of the Year, he certainly has made his case to be in the NFL Hall of Fame one day. On January 10th, Pete and the Seahawks mutually agreed for Carroll to step down as head coach, but he will remain with the team as an advisor.
