Three-Time 30-Goal Scorer Signs with the Blue Jackets

NHL

Following a 2023-24 season, which saw center Sean Monahan score 25 or more goals for the sixth time in his career, Monahan entered free agency as a top target for several teams at the beginning of the new league year. After being with the Montreal Canadiens for the past two seasons, Monahan was traded to the Winnipeg Jets at the trade deadline last season. In the second half of last season with the Jets, Monahan showcased to the Winnipeg faithful as to why they traded a first-round pick for the 11-year center. With the Jets, Monahan recorded 13 goals, 11 assists, 24 points, and three power-play goals in 34 games played. After much anticipation, it was announced that the Columbus Blue Jackets had signed Monahan to a five-year deal for $27.5 million.

At 15 years old, Monahan started his hockey career in the Ontario Hockey League, where he spent three seasons from 2010 to 2013 with the Ottawa 67’s. In the OHL, Monahan tallied 84 goals, 119 assists, and 203 points in 185 games played. Following his stint in the OHL, Monahan entered the 2013 NHL Entry Draft as one of the top-ranked prospects. With the sixth overall pick, the Calgary Flames would draft Monahan as he became a vital piece within the Flames’ offense. With the Flames, Monahan recorded 20 more goals in seven of his nine seasons and had his career-best season in 2018-19 where Monahan scored 34 goals and 48 assists in 78 games played.

Monahan, who is recognized for his scoring touch, playmaking skills, and leadership characteristics, will bring a lot of experience to the Blue Jackets’ center group. Throughout his career, he has dependably been a steady offensive performer, capable of putting up goals and making a difference at important moments. His presence on the ice will improve his new teammates' play and will be a catalyst for the success of the Blue Jackets. At 29, Monahan is still at the peak of his career. He has the same level of talent and tenacity as before, and the Blue Jackets will be counting on him to continue producing strong results as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
