Top Three Possession Receivers

NFL

Wide receiver is a prominent position in football and one key trait that some wide receivers have is being a “possession receiver.” Possession receivers are typically the taller receivers that have a high catch radius. These possession receivers are excellent in jump ball situations. Here are the top three possession receivers in football.

3. Mike Evans

Mike Evans has caught at least 1,000 receiving yards in all 10 seasons. Separation is not one of his main strengths. His main strength is securing contested throws. Even when Evans does not have separation, his quarterbacks will still throw the ball his way and give him a chance to make a play.

2. D.K. Metcalf

D.K. Metcalf has caught at least 1,000 receiving yards in three of his five seasons. He has also two seasons of scoring double-digit touchdowns. Metcalf is one of the more physically stronger players at the position. He makes it difficult for cornerbacks to play through him as a pass is coming towards him.

1. DeAndre Hopkins

DeAndre Hopkins cracked 1,000 receiving yards for the first time since 2020. Hopkins has some of the hops in the league. When a ball comes his way, with a large catch radius, he has the ability to haul in passes in traffic. On runs after the catch, Hopkins also has a terrific one-handed grip on the football.

All these possession receivers are extremely reliable when the quarterback has nobody open. They are also excellent for Hail Mary situations; although it is difficult to execute an expected play when at least five defensive backs are in the end zone, ready to contest the jump ball. Having at least one possession receiver is good to have on a team, as they bring a specific trait to the table. They can be a quarterback’s best friend in many situations.
