What Are the Giants Top Priorities Before the Clock Starts Ticking?
On Thursday evening, April 24th, 2025, the New York Giants and the rest of the NFL will begin their draft for this year's up-and-coming season. The Giants have their work cut out for them this year. There has been plenty of talk as to who they are going to draft, but everything remains to be seen. They have been keeping their options open. The Giants have a total of eight picks this year. They have the third overall pick in the first round, and they have another pick at 99 for a compensatory selection. They also have two picks that they received from the Seattle Seahawks and the Buffalo Bills.
They have only ever had the third overall pick twice in their franchise history. The last time they had this pick was in 1984, when the team drafted the Giants Ring of Honor and two-time Super Bowl Champion linebacker Carl Banks, who was coming out of Michigan at the time. They need to have an answer by the time Thursday night comes around, and pick up several people who are going to make a difference on the team, and not land them where they were last season with a record of 3-14. The Giants also don’t want to land with several Giants busts as they have in the past drafts. There are a few areas of key needs that the Giants have for this year.
The main point that the Giants need to fix is the quarterback position. The Giants may have signed both Russell Wilson for a one-year contract and Jameis Winston for a two-year contract. However, they still need to identify a long-term quarterback for the team. They are looking to land Cam Ward, but they are also looking to land Shedeur Sanders in case Ward is drafted in the first two picks. They have their options open, however, there has been talk of the Giants not drafting a quarterback at points and waiting until the following year to pick up someone else.
The Giants also need to focus on their defensive line. They have added some depth to the league through free agency. However, it will not be enough to add to the defensive line to help both Dexter Lawrence and Brian Burns. They need to add someone who is going to help close the gaps. It would be big for Abdul Carter to be added to the line and complement both of these defensive linemen.
The right guard position is another area that the Giants need to focus on for this year's draft selection. They re-signed Greg Van Roten and have Jermaine Eluemunor as the second-string right guard. However, the Giants need to draft someone who is going to execute the position in a better way. In other words, the Giants need an upgrade to the current position. Otherwise, besides these top three areas, the Giants just need to make overall improvements to their offensive line and their defensive line. They need to find the playmakers who are going to make things happen on the field. The ability to do that in a play is a major factor for the Giants, and the team will definitely focus on that skill during the draft. They need to look at both the offense and the defense to help the Giants be successful for this upcoming season, and allow management to get itself off the hot seat.
