What the Brennan Carroll Hire Means for the Raiders

NFL

The Las Vegas Raiders hired Brennan Carroll as their offensive line coach and run game coordinator. Carroll's father, Pete, was hired as the Raiders head coach in late January. The younger Carroll served as the University of Washington's offensive coordinator in 2024. In his new role, Carroll will work closely with Chip Kelly, who was hired as the Raiders' offensive coordinator on Sunday, and together, they will be responsible for shaping the team's running game strategy.

Experience

Carroll brings a wealth of experience from both collegiate and professional football. His recent roles as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at the University of Washington in 2024 and similar positions at the University of Arizona from 2021 to 2023 honed his skills. His NFL tenure with the Seattle Seahawks from 2015 to 2020, working under his father, further solidified his expertise. Carroll’s experience will pay dividends to the Raiders coaching staff.

Offensive Line Development

Carroll's extensive experience coaching offensive lines, particularly at the college level with Washington and Arizona, is a promising sign for the Raiders. His role in developing linemen and improving pass protection and run blocking will be crucial for the team. At the same time, they aim to solidify their front five. The fact that the Raiders started two rookies on the offensive line last year and are likely to draft more linemen underscores the importance of Carroll's development skills for Las Vegas.

Run Game Expertise

Carroll has emphasized physical, downhill rushing attacks as a run game coordinator at Arizona and Washington. His coaching style, which prioritizes aggressive running plays and a strong offensive line, could significantly improve the Raiders' ground game. He also used a variety of run concepts at Washington last season, showcasing his versatility and adaptability. A power-rushing attack would favor running back Zamir White, who struggled last year in the zone scheme. I expect the Raiders to go after other running backs to match what they want to go in the ground game. With the recent hiring of Kelly as offensive coordinator, Carroll's experience in up-tempo offenses could mesh well with Kelly's system, potentially giving the Raiders a more dynamic attack.

Outlook

The Raiders' addition of Carroll to the coaching staff is significant. His hiring is expected to significantly enhance the team's offensive line and running game, which need improvement for the Raiders to be competitive in 2025. Las Vegas has put together a solid coaching staff so far; they have a few more coaches to hire to complete the staff. Once the staff is complete, it is time to find a quarterback.
