Why Are There So Few Americans in Formula One History?
Logan Sargeant’s Exit
We are now entering the second half of the Formula One 2024 season. This past weekend was the first since the summer break for the drivers and already, we have an exit. The only American in the league at the moment is Logan Sargeant. His performance, as of late, is disappointing, to say the least. With his highest position being 11th this season, gaining zero points, it’s no wonder why Williams decided to give him the boot halfway through. Last season, his debut in Formula One, he only earned one point throughout the whole season.
Though these stats are discouraging, he is the first American to join Formula One in about eight years. The last American to join Formula One was Alexander Rossi, with only five starts and zero points in Formula One. Even more disappointing is America's most recent podium position, which was in the early 90’s. That was only third place, too. Sergeant’s appearance in Formula One is impressive in itself, but why aren’t there more Americans in Formula One?
Throughout all of Formula One history there have only been 58 Americans and only 33 wins. Most recognizable drivers who accomplished these were driving in the 60’s and 70’s. The most notable is Mario Antonelli. These numbers are definitely larger than most countries in Formula One, but at the same time, there are countries like the United Kingdom with 163 entries throughout all of Formula One history. This season alone there are four entries. One of which is Lewis Hamilton, the most decorated Formula One Champion. With his 105 wins, you can see the U.K. is capable of adding more drivers, and good ones at that.
Upcoming Drivers
Some possible upcoming Americans would be Jak Crawford and Juan Manuel Correa, both drivers for Dams Lucas Oil in Formula Two. Crawford seems to be a more likely option as he is a younger driver and has improved throughout his career. This season, he is currently in fifth place overall, which is great for this young driver. Correa Is still a very potential option as well coming up these next few years. He has grown steadily since his joining Formula Four in 2016. With signs of improvement still to come. So, who will be our next American driver in Formula One now that Logan Sargeant has left?
