Why the Giants’ 2019 Sixth Pick Has Sunk to the Third String
The decision to bench Daniel Jones came about early at the beginning of the week after the Giants just came off of a bye week. There has been much discussion about this happening this season and now it has officially arrived. Jones hasn’t been pushed back to number two, he has been pushed back as the third-string quarterback. Many fans have been speculating as to why this decision was made, many thought Drew Lock would be made the third starting quarterback, yet Lock was named the backup behind new starter Tommy DeVito.
In Jones' contract, there is a 23-million-dollar injury guarantee. This was one of the big factors that played into Jones getting moved as the third backup quarterback. This was a crucial move on the Giants' part, and it was something that needed to be done. If Jones suffers a serious injury that prevents him from passing the physical on March 12th, he receives a guaranteed 12 million. If he couldn’t pass a physical by next September when the season starts, then he’s guaranteed another 11 million to add to that. However, the decision to bench Jones doesn’t totally get rid of the entire injury guarantee. It can still kick in if Jones gets hurt at an organizational event or a team activity anywhere on the premises for the Giants team. This would also balloon his payout from 22 million to 44 Million. This came as a big factor to drop him down to the bottom of the quarterback list.
Jones hasn’t really played well all season; the Giants just came out of a bye week with a record of 2-8. Jones has thrown 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions all season. Fans will not be seeing him again on the field. They did not send him packing just yet, he is expected to show up for the rest of the season for all of the games. Fans are going to see what happens for the rest of the season with Jones and everyone else on the team. The Giants will host the Buccaneers at home on Sunday at MetLife Stadium and then they will take on the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day.
