Three Possible Jet General Manager Replacements
The New York Jets have had a downhill season, now at 3-8 due to their rough recent 28-27 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Six weeks ago, the Jets fired their head coach, Robert Saleh, and today, they fired their General Manager Joe Douglas. This has been one season the Jets will want to forget but surely never forget due to how disappointing it’s been. Things haven’t gone the way they hoped since being projected at the beginning of the season as a playoff contender by some.
Douglas has been with the team since June 2019. He has spent the last four seasons trying to piece this team together and build it how he wants to, trading for pieces like Aaron Rodgers, and then Davante Adams this season. He tried to fix this team that has spent the last decade or so desperately looking to be good, but this decision was different for this Jets team. Douglas has overspent and wasted picks that were needed to fix the Jets. It was time for them to make a change.
The Jets are scrambling to figure something out with Douglas being fired for next season. At the moment, Phil Savage is stepping in to cover the Jet's management for the rest of the 2024 season. Before coming to the Jets, he was the General Manager of the Cleveland Browns from 2005 to 2008. Here are some possible candidates to replace Douglas for next season:
1. Mike Borganazi
Mike Borganazi has been great. He’s one of the top guys in the NFL when it comes to teams looking for general managers. He is currently the assistant manager for the Kansas City Chiefs. He has been with this team for well over 16 seasons. He was promoted in 2021 from his position of director of football operations. Before that, he was a co-director of player personnel.
He has specialized in creating teams and scouting for the Kansas City Chiefs. Borganazi has advised the Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach as to what he should do, and a lot of fans have been thrilled to see what the Cheifs have done over the last three seasons, considering they’ve had back-to-back Super Bowl rosters that came out on top. He knows how to build a team, and this is someone the Jets need to look into. Borganazi has helped make the Chiefs who they are today. He is well-spoken about across the league. The Chiefs have been spot-on with their drafts because of him and main general manager Veach. If The Jets could plug someone in from that staff, it would be for the greater good of the Jets.
2. Ed Dodds
Ed Dods is another one that is highly talked about. He is currently the assistant manager for the Indianapolis Colts and has helped establish and build a well-rounded team for Indianapolis. The Colts could have made the playoffs last season, and even with their quarterback struggles this season, the Colts are second in the AFC South behind the Houston Texans. Dods has been with Indianapolis since 2018. Back during the 2023 NFL Draft, he drafted 12 players who are shaping the foundation of this Colts team. He has 21 years of being in the front office with at least three teams. He’s been with the Seahawks, and the Raiders before the Colts. If Dodds could turn the Colts around, he can make the Jets look like a different team if they decide to take him on for next season.
3. Terrance Gray
Bills' Director of Player Personal Terrance Gray would be a good choice for the Jets to replace Douglas. He’s been with them for seven seasons and has helped to craft the team to almost a Super Bowl contender year after year. Gray has also worked with the Minnesota Vikings and the Chiefs before joining the Bills. He has experience in the front office and working with the General Manager Accelerator Program. So, he has experience in making things happen for specific teams and has been a scout earlier in his career. The Jets would benefit from a guy like this running their team.
The Jets just need to find the right guy. They have not had great picks, and management has been no help. If they put any of these guys in, they can turn this team into something decent for next season. They will stick with what they must work with, and the Jet will go from there.
