Why the Washington Wizards Should Trade Their Assets
The Washington Wizards are having a tough go-around for the 2024-2025 NBA Season. They are currently 2-16, losers of their last 14 games and this team did not pick up a single win in the month of November. While they drafted Alexandre Sarr as the second overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, his production has not been as consistent as Washington hoped. At this point, as the bottom-tier team within the Eastern Conference, this Wizards team should trade their assets and hope for the best come the NBA Draft or in free agency.
One Wizards player that could be on the trade block this season is Kyle Kuzma. Since joining Washington, Kuzma has been the best if not the second-best player on the team. The past two seasons he averaged over 20 points, and while he’s only scoring about 16 a night this season, he’s still second in points per game, behind Jordan Poole. Kuzma is currently earning 23 million dollars this season and perhaps could be the right price for a team hunting for a playoff spot. Another player could be Poole, who perhaps has the worst contract in NBA history. Even though his numbers have improved from last season, Poole is not playing as well for someone who’s earning nearly 30 million dollars this season.
A third asset that could be potentially traded is Malcolm Brogdon. It seems like throughout his career, Brogdon has helped teams become playoff contenders and or championship contenders. Whether that was in Milwaukee, Indiana, or Boston, Brogdon has done everything he can for each of the organizations he’s been a part of! There could certainly be a playoff-caliber team interested in pulling the trigger for the former Sixth Man of the Year. A final Wizards player would be Jonas Valančiūnas who just signed with Washington in free agency a few months ago. At 32 years of age, he’s still averaging about 12 points and eight rebounds in 20 minutes a game. Many teams can use Valančiūnas’ skills on the offensive and defensive glass.
At this point, this season is a wash for the Washington Wizards. It would be best to go back to the drawing board and find a top prospect to go after for next year’s draft. With the way the season is looking, the Wizards would be in contention with teams like the Philadelphia 76ers, New Orleans Pelicans, and Utah Jazz for the first pick. Wizard fans are hoping their team can do right with this pick in 2025 whether it is the first pick or not, so this team can start their rebuild process and mold the team for future success. It would be best to trade their assets for valuable draft picks they could use eventually.
