Will Matthew Golden Be the Cowboys Next Big Draft Pick?

NFL

The Dallas Cowboys are in dire need of wide receiver help at the moment. The loss of Brandin Cooks leaves them without a true number two receiver next to All-Pro CeeDee Lamb. What Dallas has lacked for recent years has been a deep threat to stretch the field for Dak Prescott and Co. One receiver in this draft who has been rising in stock ever since his combine is Texas wideout Matthew Golden. If the Cowboys want to be able to move the ball downfield in a flash, Golden is the man.

Golden in 2024-2025

Golden had a solid junior year in his first season on the Longhorns. He put up 987 receiving yards and nine touchdowns on 58 receptions, with his best game coming against Arizona State in the Peach Bowl, putting up 149 yards and a touchdown on seven catches. The reason for the rise in Golden's stock is his traits, running the fastest 40-yard dash time among all receivers and second fastest at the event at 4.29 seconds. His speed, along with his ability to make highlight play catches from out of nowhere, is why he is now a first-round talent.

Speed to Dallas?

It is a no-brainer for the Cowboys to draft Golden if they are able to. Granted, at pick 12, Dallas might have several options to choose from at receiver, such as Emeka Egbuka or Missouri's Luther Burden, but Golden makes a strong case to be the choice. As stated before, Dallas has not had a deep threat for most of Prescott’s time. Other than Michael Gallup, no other Cowboy receiver has been able to build that deep ball connection with Dak. With Golden's speed, he, without a doubt, would not only help Prescott make those deep downfield plays but would also help Lamb draw less attention. It’ll be difficult to draw away attention from a star player such as Lamb; however, having a speedster like Golden next to him would make his life a lot easier. Lamb has been stellar as the clearcut number one option, but the addition of Golden would solidify the two as a top duo in the NFL and finally give Prescott another elite player next to Lamb since the departure of Amari Cooper.
