Will the Lady Eagles Take Flight in the Sun Belt Tournament Against GA Southern?
The Southern Miss Lady Eagles women’s basketball is ranked 13th in the Sun Belt Conference, which is not so good compared to the team they're up against, which is GA Southern, and they are in 11th place in the Sun Belt. Both of these teams have matched up against each other in the past before in February this year, and the score resulted in 49-42. The Southern Eagles beat them by seven points in this game. The previous game, the Miss Lady Eagles matchup against the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns women's basketball team, ended with a score of 64-53. However, regarding this matchup, this was a challenge for Miss Lady Eagles. Perhaps since they are so low in conference and they are ranked sixth, that should have been a wake-up call for Ragin’ Cajuns that any other team can beat them at their own game, which they did. Southern Miss was able to work around Louisiana and work the ball, get possession, and put shots up. They were not giving up without a fight, they were able to attack and get as many shots up to keep up with Louisiana.
Melyia Grayson was a game point leader for this game, and she will be coming the same way against GA Southern without a doubt. Grayson contributes 14.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game. This is one player you'll have to really two-on-two guard. Meanwhile, Bre Sutton adds on 2.2 steals. Being that this is the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament, GA Southern is going to do whatever they need to do to get a win to move on to the next round. It all ends with which teams are going to play hard to win the most, not the coaches. The way fans are looking at this game is that GA Southern will take over this game, but the way Southern Miss took the win from Louisiana, they will have to do the same thing but put pressure on the ball coming out on the court, not second-guess, put backs on the glass, get the rebounds, and go to the free throw line to get those points. In the recent five games Southern Miss has played, they were only able to get one victory, and that was against Louisiana; the rest they lost against Georgia Southern. On the other hand, Georgia Southern has won three of the recent games they played and fell short against two, which is not bad, but they're in that mindset of wanting to win once again from the time they played before. GA Southern has some great players on their team as well, Nicole Gwynn is one of their leading guards.
Southern Miss will have to watch out for Gwynn being their point leader; she puts up 12.9, with the help of Nakiyah Mays-Prince making 2.4 assists and 1.8 steals. Indya Green and Leah Johnson do their part with 8.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks. GA Southern's previous win was against the Old Dominion Monarchs, where they swept the court with a score of 86-79. GA Southern had a lot of fast breaks on the glass and one-on-ones in the paint, even though the Monarchs are not a great three-point shooting team. This game was a back-and-forth fight because every player was sprinting down the lane, getting steals, and scoring three-pointer shots from far ranges. Southern Eagles were able to make a lot of great passes for easy layups, so this matchup with Southern Miss Lady Eagles versus GA Southern will be a fight between the Eagles. These teams will premiere on ESPN+ at 12:30 p.m. EST on March 4th at Pensacola Bay Center.
