Will the NCAA Baseball Rankings Be Making Room for New Teams?
This NCAA baseball season has been full of ups and downs for every team that has been ranked. There are so many games sometimes it is hard to tell who will end up where. Taking the strength of the opponent, if it’s a midweek game or a series, and if they’re playing home or away all contribute to just how significant a win can be. Let’s take a look at the bottom three teams in the Division One baseball top 25 to see if they’ll be set to remain ranked or fall off the list when this week’s play comes to an end.
Number 23 Arizona:
At 19-6, Arizona has the opportunity to swing themselves up in the rankings with a few good wins. Unfortunately, they currently sit in the loss column. This weekend the Wildcats hosted Baylor in a three-game series where they took a hard loss in Game One. A series win is necessary and the 24th and 25th-ranked teams must also play poorly if they wish to remain ranked. It will not be a shock to see them booted from Monday’s rankings.
Number 24 UCLA:
The Bruins, especially if they sweep their series against Purdue on Sunday, will be able to breathe a bit and sit comfortably in their spot at the bottom of the rankings. They’re not playing baseball that’s wowing anybody that’s for sure. However, they’re playing good consistent ball and it’s keeping them afloat. High-scoring games and narrow wins that have them on a five-game win streak are what make this team worthy of their top 25 rankings.
Number 25 Georgia Tech:
Being in the ACC hasn’t made it easy for Georgia Tech to claw their way into a ranked spot. This team has an impressive fight in them though. A huge 18-2 run-rule win against third-ranked Clemson proves that this team isn’t messing around. Even if they lose the series, a close game on Sunday may be enough to keep them from dropping from the rankings. A series loss on Arizona’s end may also benefit the Yellow Jackets this week.
