Wilson Or Winston: Who Should Be the Next Giants Starter?
The 2025 NFL Draft is only a few weeks away. There is much speculation going on as to what the Giants are going to do with the third overall pick. General manager Joe Schoen has stated that the Giants can go, “any direction,” with their draft pick. They may or may not make the decision to pull a brand-new quarterback onto their roster. However, they have two veterans who are going to end up battling it and in turn, earn the number one spot to be the Giants' next franchise quarterback for the next year or two.
The Giants took on both Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson— two quarterbacks who have a history of playing in the NFL for the last several years. Winston and Wilson both have proven themselves that they have what it takes to be a team's leading quarterback. They both have played decently and they both want to start in New York. However, there has been a little bit of a debate as to who should step in. Let’s take a look into both of their careers.
Winston has been playing in the NFL since he was drafted back in 2015. Originally playing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for several seasons before this veteran quarterback moved into playing with the New Orleans Saints for four seasons. Last season, with the injury to Deshaun Watson, he spent time as the starter for the Cleveland Browns. Although he played well, the Browns had themselves a miserable season.
In total between these five teams, he has started in 105 games. His career has consisted of him completing 1,944 completions that were attempted for 3,178 and 24,225 yards. Winston’s completion rate is 61.2 percent and he has thrown 111 interceptions in his career. Something that the Giants are used to but can easily be pertained with a little bit of work in the up-and-coming season. He wanted to be the starter and had stated that he had shown interest in being the Giants starting quarterback from the moment they announced they were looking for a starting quarterback during the offseason. With Winston having the interest, he may have the ingredients to help the Giants put the puzzle pieces most of the way back together this season.
Wilson on the other hand has been a different story. He was selected in the third round by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2012 NFL Draft. In total for Wilson's career, he has a record of 64.7 percent completion rate. He has passed for 46,135 yards and scored 350 touchdowns. Wilson also has thrown 111 interceptions during his career. It’s not terrible but again, something that Giants are trying to cut down on for the new season. Wilson has stated that he expects to be the Giants starter in the new season. He has the heart to play football and has shown his leadership to all of the teams he has played with to set the bar higher. This veteran quarterback has also won one Super Bowl back in 2013. Wilson knows what he needs to do and knows how to run each one of the teams that he plays for. He has seen 17 games in his playoff career and has made 27 touchdowns.
The answers are obvious as to who the Giants starting quarterback should be. Both Wilson and Winston need to take their time with the Giants as welcoming as they are to both of them. They want these veterans to earn their spots and prove themselves that they have what it takes to be a franchise quarterback, especially on this team that desperately needs to be put back together and not be starting at the bottom in their up-and-coming season.
