2023 All-Star Resigns with the Athletics
Today, the Oakland Athletics and outfielder Brent Rooker agreed to a five-year deal worth up to 60 million dollars. The agreement includes an option for a sixth year and if so the contract would be worth up to 90 million. The 2023 all-star is the first Athletics player to be signed to a five-year deal since 2011. Last month, the A’s signed starting pitcher Luis Severino to a big deal as well. Oakland will look to make the most of their time before moving to Las Vegas in a few seasons.
Rooker started off his career with the Minnesota Twins being drafted as the 35th overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft. After two seasons, the future all-star was traded to the San Diego Padres. Not long after, he was traded again, this time to the Kansas City Royals. In November 2022, the A’s claimed Rooker off of outright waivers. He’s been in Oakland since, earning an all-star nod in 2023 after recording 114 hits, and 30 home runs. This past season, Rooker won a Silver Slugger Award after putting up a career-high in nearly all categories.
In 145 games last season, the 2023 all-star accumulated 160 hits, 39 home runs, 112 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases with a .293 batting average. After a 2023 season when they only won 50 games, Oakland bounced back to win 19 additional games in 2024. They can certainly surprise fans in 2025 and make a run for the postseason. One of the guys who can lead the charge for Oakland is Rooker. Although they play in a tough division, this team could make the changes and may have grown from previous seasons. It will be interesting to see if Rooker can continue his great play for the Athletics.
