Two-Time All-Star Starting Pitcher Signs Three-Year Deal with the A’s
Last season, the New York Mets made it to the National League Championship Series and many fans were surprised to see how this team really turned things around during the second half of the season, clinching a Wild Card spot and going on to the round before the World Series before being eliminated by the eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers. One of the reasons why the Mets turned it around was because of starting pitcher Luis Severino. The long-time New York Yankee starter signed with their cross-town rival last season and wanted to prove his worth. Even though he did not have the best season of his career, it was just announced the Oakland Athletics and the two-time all-star starting pitcher agreed to a three-year deal which includes 67 million guaranteed as the A’s bump up their payroll.
In 2024, Oakland improved by 19 games after their rough 2023 season. They did not finish last within the division, and with 69 wins compared to 50 the previous year, this team has the chance to improve once more as we are three years removed from the team moving to Las Vegas. Severino clearly took this deal to secure his family’s future, and to potentially play when the team moves to Vegas, this team is certainly a couple of years away from a serious postseason run. It’s going to be interesting to see how the two-time all-star starting pitcher fits into the Athletics system and whether he can continue his success.
With New York last season, in 31 starts, Severino went 11-7. Through 182 innings pitched he recorded a 3.91 ERA and 161 strikeouts. Hopefully, with the A’s he can regain the dominance he once had while with the New York Yankees. During one of his all-star seasons in 2018, he went 19-8 and struck out 220 batters. How successful will Severino and the Athletics be next season?
