26-Year-Old Offensive Guard Agrees to Resign with the Patriots

NFL

Since the departure of quarterback Tom Brady in 2019, every member of the remaining New England Patriots has been trying to find their way. That includes 26-year-old offensive guard Mike Onwenu. During the first four seasons of his career, Onwenu has dealt with many highs and lows. After becoming a free agent at the end of the 2023 season, he knew that he needed to find a team with some stability at his position and that could grant him a starting spot. Today, Mike agreed to terms back with the Patriots for three years and up to 57 million dollars.

Mike Onwenu was one of the top recruits in the state of Michigan and decided to play all four years of his college football career at the University of Michigan. With the Wolverines, Onwenu played on the offensive, and defensive side of the ball during his freshman season, before sticking with right guard for the final three years of his college career. He was named to the Third-Team All-Big Ten twice in 2018, and 2019. The 26-year-old offensive guard was selected by the New England Patriots as the 182nd overall pick in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

During his rookie season, Mike looked phenomenal, as he was ranked as one of the best offensive guards in the league and was named to the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie Team. Onwenu struggled during his sophomore season and was benched but started to turn things around in his third NFL season. After the Patriots went a miserable 4-13, the 26-year-old offensive guard has another opportunity to have a much better chance in developing his skillset and make him one of the best at his position once again.
