A Review of the Mess that Was the Mexican Grand Prix

This past weekend was a mess for a lot of drivers and teams. Teams like Red Bull, RB, and Aston Martin were struggling greatly throughout the entire race week, including the practice races. There were crashes, arguments, and losses for a little less than half of the grid this weekend. On the other hand, laughs, wins and improvements were in place for the other half.

Albon Crash

Alex Albon of the Williams Racing team had a difficult weekend with a crash in the first lap. In the past few races, there have been some issues with Williams’ timing and steering that have ended up in a couple of crashes. Albon, sadly, was the victim of the team’s inconsistencies. Crashing in Lap One, gaining zero points for his team. Williams racing team also had Liam Lawson driving for them this weekend. He is a recent replacement for the American driver Logan Sargeant

Perez and Lawson Feud

Lawson was facing some issues this weekend as well. As a relatively new driver in the league, there will be pushback from some drivers. It just happened to be Sergio Perez this time. In his home race, too. The drama started off with Perez blocking and cutting off Lawson throughout the race, trying to keep him behind. Lawson of course made his way past Perez, as he was lacking in speed the entire race. Lawson pulled out the middle finger as he drove past, showing his frustration. After the race there was a video of Lawson and Perez talking, possibly arguing, with each other. Perez’s pace and cutting off of Lawson could have led to a dangerous outcome, Luckily there were no crashes between them.

Max Verstappen’s Penalties

Perez’s teammate was also racing recklessly in Mexico. Max Verstappen was driving so poorly that he received two 10-second penalties during the race. Both were given because of his dangerous moves against Lando Norris. He would cut him off in a very dangerous fashion that luckily did not end up in a crash for them. Similar to the Lawson-Perez incident, Norris of course passed Verstappen and ended up in second position, right behind his buddy Sainz.

Sainz’ Win

Carlos Sainz achieved another win for this season, making it two for 2024. It was a beautiful weekend for him as he was very successful during practice and qualifying previous to the actual race. Then got first place before his season ended with his dream team, Ferrari. Sainz was visibly very happy with the outcome and even photobombed Lando Norris’ picture with his previous team, McLaren. In return, Zach Brown did the same for Ferrari. Later that night Sainz and Norris went to a celebratory family dinner for his second win this season. They certainly relished their wins together before prepping for next weekend’s race in Brazil.
