Is Tommy DeVito Capable of Being a Starting Quarterback for the Giants
Let's talk about the quarterback room for the New York Giants. Currently, on this team, there are at least three quarterbacks. Each of them is special in their own way and has their unique playing style. However, there are only two in the Meadowlands that everyone has been focused on for the last two seasons. Daniel Jones and Tommy DeVito have been the talk of New York since the middle of last year when Jones went out in the middle of the season with a torn ACL injury. One is not better than the other, but it is believed that many would like to see a shake-up in New York at some point with the young quarterback and the 160 million-dollar signed quarterback. Last season, the only reason it happened was because he was out on injury, but a significant difference was made on the field.
Daniel Jones has been the New York Giants quarterback for the last six seasons. That said, Jones has yet to do much for this team. His biggest weakness is, it’s believed, his accuracy level. It’s very concerning for this team. It’s easy to point out that it’s the offensive line's fault, and Daniel Jones constantly feels pressure. However, he holds onto the ball for too long while playing on the field. Jones has played in a total of 60 games over his career playing with the Giants. Jones' stats hold up to a 64.3 completion percentage. It's not great for a starting quarterback, nor is it how many games he has played. He has had 40 interceptions throughout his career and has been sacked along with them well over 179 times. Jones has never done well under pressure, so he is stressed on the field. Sometimes, he will make the effort to run down the field. He has made 62 touchdowns in his career out of all the 60 games he has played.
On the other hand, DeVito has something to fight for regarding this position. DeVito has managed, no matter who he is playing with on the field, such as the starting line, the second line, and the third line, to push the ball down the field and score touchdowns where they needed to be made. Something that New York hasn’t seen in a while. DeVito does very well playing with pressure. He has only played nine games with the New York Giants throughout his NFL career. His completion percentage is about the same as Jones'; he has a 64 percent completion rate. In total, DeVito has 114 completed passes. As much as Jones runs down the field, DeVito steps in to do it a little more than he does, and his accuracy level is slightly stronger. In the last year, Tommy DeVito brought the Giants several wins they needed, and last year, they were even on the bubble to play in the playoffs despite not making it.
The Giants have a lot to go through. Jones may still be out of shape because he hasn’t played over the last year, but even before that, the starting quarterback has always had trouble making ends meet. It showed during last weekend's game against the Texans. If they choose to start him this weekend against the Jets, fans may or may not see a difference for this quarterback. He threw two interceptions then, which makes fans think he won’t do it if he plays in this coming weekend's game. Despite only playing in nine games, DeVito has thrown very few interceptions. As stated, he can move the ball down the field further than Jones. DeVito is definitely the guy to look towards for the Giants if they are looking to make a change for the up-and-coming future. There is a chance Tommy DeVito can overthrow Daniel Jones as a starting quarterback.
