It’s All Love in Green Bay with a New Contract Extension
After only one season of starting, Jordan Love has signed a new massive contract extension with the Green Bay Packers to become the highest-paid quarterback in the league. With his new deal, Love will make $220 million over four years with a record-setting $75 million signing bonus. Only hours after Tua Tagovailoa signed his own extension with the Dolphins, the Packers quickly followed with a similar deal to lock up their franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future. However, unlike the Dolphins who may have trouble in their future because of the deal they made with their quarterback, things are really looking up for Green Bay with this new deal secured.
Although I didn’t expect Jordan Love to get signed this offseason until the Packers saw a few more games from the young quarterback, out of all the quarterbacks that are up for contracts this offseason, Love makes the most sense to get a long-term deal. In the first year of the Packers, post-Aaron-Rodgers, Jordan Love exceeded all expectations. Love finished this past season with the second-most passing touchdowns with 32 and the seventh-most passing yards with 4,159 in the NFL. Love’s most impressive win last season came in the Wild Card Round in the playoffs against the Dallas Cowboys. In this game, the Packers ended up winning 48-32 with Love posting 272 yards and three passing touchdowns against a top-rated Cowboys defense.
As for the Packers’ side of this deal, they should feel thrilled to get this deal done. Green Bay has been a model of consistency in the NFL, unlike so many other organizations throughout the league. Although they haven’t won a Super Bowl since 2010, they have made the playoffs 10 times and reached the conference finals four times since that Super Bowl run 14 years ago. Despite being the smallest market team in the NFL, they have found ways to create a culture for winning by providing stability to both the coaching and quarterback positions. The franchise has only had two primary coaches for the team with Mike McCarthy and Matt LaFleur since 2006, and only three starting quarterbacks with Brett Farve, Aaron Rodgers, and now Jordan Love since 1992. This type of consistency has allowed the team to build around their superstar quarterbacks at any present time. Now, it is up to Jordan Love to carry the NFL’s most historic franchise back to the promised land with this new deal cementing him as the next great Packers quarterback.
