Six-Year Linebacker Signs with the Panthers

NFL

After only playing two games of the 2021 season due to a pectoral injury, linebacker Josey Jewell has done a fantastic job bringing his career back on track. Since being drafted by the Broncos in 2018, the six-year linebacker has not seen the playoffs once. Last season, Denver had expectations to be a pretty decent football club, but it all fell apart as the season unraveled. Jewell became a free agent at season’s end, and today he signed a three-year deal worth almost 23 million dollars with the Carolina Panthers.

Josey Jewell played four years of college ball at the University of Iowa. During his sophomore season with the Hawkeyes, in 14 games he led the team with 126 tackles, three sacks, and four interceptions. He led the team in tackles and sacks the following year. As a senior in 2017, the future six-year linebacker was named a Unanimous All-American and to the First-Team All-Big Ten, and was awarded the Loft Trophy, the Jack Lambert Trophy, Nagurski-Woodson Defensive Player of the Year, Butkus-Fitzgerald Linebacker of the Year.

The six-year linebacker played in 16 games during the 2023 season. He recorded 108 combined tackles, 60 of them being solo tackles, and the other 48 were assisted tackles. Jewell also had two tackles for a loss of yardage, three sacks, and three pass deflections. In eight of his 16 games played, Josey had at least nine or more combined tackles. On December 10th, in a 24-7 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, Jewell had nine combined tackles, one tackle for a loss of yardage, one sack, and one pass deflection.
