The Giants Collapse Against the Buccaneers
It was another game for the Giants, one that brought them even closer to securing a first-round draft pick for next season. The Giants faced the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and many were hoping Tommy DeVito would bring the heat, but it backfired in today's game. The final score was 30-7. The Giants now fall to 2-9, with no hopes of making the playoffs this year. Here are the top three takeaways from the game.
1. Tommy DeVito's First Game Back
As fans know, there was a lot of hype this past week for Tommy DeVito's return to MetLife Stadium, the Giants' home turf. However, things didn't go as planned. DeVito showed the usual flashes fans have grown accustomed to seeing when he’s stepped in for former quarterback Daniel Jones. In today's game, he completed 21 of 31 passes for a total of 189 yards. He had no interceptions but was sacked three times, and he added seven carries for 32 yards.
DeVito had a decent game, it wasn’t great, but he faced a lot of pressure on the field. He passed the ball whenever he found an opening and made smart decisions with his play. DeVito had no trouble in that regard; the real issue was the offensive line. He had the footwork to make things happen and used it to his advantage when he could.
2. The Giants’ Offense Was Not Okay
The Giants' offense did not play its best game; in fact, they haven’t played their best game in a while. In today's game, it was missed catch after missed catch, an emerging problem. There were times when Theo Johnson, Malik Nabers, and Tyrone Tracy Jr. made plays on the field, but it was the rookie class that did most of the work. Johnson was a big playmaker in today's game, often catching the ball and being the go-to guy for DeVito. He finished with three receptions for 39 yards.
Nabers hasn’t had a touchdown since Week Three, and fans were hoping to see something explosive from him. He had six receptions for 64 yards. Fans are eager to see Nabers have another breakthrough game. Lastly, Tracy was decent on the field. He was the guy everyone was still looking for, especially DeVito. Tracy had nine attempts for 42 yards. However, he repeated what happened in Germany, which cost the Giants an overtime win. He lost the ball during one of the final drives when he was supposed to score a touchdown, but instead, he fumbled, and the Buccaneers recovered it, later scoring again. This is definitely something the Giants need to address for the rest of their season.
3. The Defense Did Not Come Through
The Giants' defense was bulldozed. The Buccaneers were unstoppable. No matter how hard they tried, many players slipped, couldn’t stop the receiver in time, or left wide openings. This was a huge problem for the defense, as it was blow after blow. Brian Burns was the only one really making the stops, something that needs to improve for the rest of the season. The defensive line requires a collective effort, not just one player. There were moments in this game when the defense did make stops, and those were the first fans had seen in a while. Fans should expect to see more of this, stopping the offense, and not being bulldozed by the other team in every game.
