Three-Time 20-Goal Scorer Signs with the Flames

NHL

Following the Vegas Golden Knight’s first-round elimination to the Dallas Stars in Game Seven last postseason, nine-year winger Anthony Mantha entered free agency looking to secure his new contract after continuing his productive play in Vegas last season. After being traded from the Washington Capitals to the Golden Knights at the trade deadline last season, Mantha had the opportunity to join the defending Stanley Cup Champions as they embarked on their postseason journey. Despite the early exit, Mantha made a formidable impact on Vegas’ offensive production with Mantha adding three goals, seven assists, and 10 points in 18 games played. According to Sportsnet NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, the Calgary Flames have agreed to a one-year deal for $3.5 million with Mantha heading into the 2024-25 season.

Mantha, 29, started his amateur hockey career in the QMJHL in 2010 with the Val-d'Or Foreurs. During his four seasons with the Foreurs, Mantha scored 129 goals, 131 assists, and 260 points in 189 games played. After a 57-goal season with the Foreurs in 2013-14, Mantha would sign a three-year, entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings. The veteran winger would make his NHL debut on March 15th, 2016 against the Philadelphia Flyers and would score his first career goal nine days later against the Montreal Canadiens. Over his nine-year career, Mantha has recorded three seasons of 20 goals or more and has scored a total of 142 goals, 154 assists, 296 points, and 32 power-play goals in 494 games played.

Since coming into the NHL, Mantha has become one of the NHL's best goal scorers, often putting up huge totals and having a big influence on the ice. He will remain an important offensive weapon for the Flames going into next season because of his capacity to use his size and power to create space and create scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates. The signing of Mantha checked off a blatant need in the Flames’ winger group as they look to make multiple runs at the Stanley Cup for the foreseeable future. With Mantha signed, the Flames have the potential and abilities to bring it all together and enjoy sustained success for years to come.
