Two-Way Winger Re-Signs with the Hurricanes

NHL

Following two straight breakout seasons with the Hurricanes, where Jordan Martinook has scored 27 goals, 39 assists, and 66 points over the past two seasons, Martinook entered free agency with his eyes on securing a long-term deal. During the Hurricanes’ playoff run last season, Martinook had a noticeable impact on the team’s offense scoring two goals, two assists, and four points in 11 playoff games. According to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, Martinook and the Hurricanes have come to a contract agreement to lock up the impactful winger for the long haul. The contract is reportedly a three-year deal, worth $9.15 million.

Prior to entering the NHL, Martinook, 31, spent two seasons playing in the WHL with the Vancouver Giants from 2010 to 2012. Martinook had 92 points, 41 assists, 51 goals, and 147 penalty minutes during his time with the Giants. The Arizona Coyotes selected him in the second round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft where Martinook advanced through the lower leagues and finally cemented his spot in the NHL during the 2015-16 season. Over the years, his versatility on the ice has allowed him to become an essential component of his teams. With the Coyotes and Hurricanes throughout his ten-year NHL career, Martinook has amassed 80 goals, 117 assists, 197 points, and one power-play goal.

Martinook proved to be a powerful checking forward throughout his time with the Arizona Coyotes and later the Carolina Hurricanes. His rugged style of play is complemented by his defensive skill, which is demonstrated by his ability to nullify opposition threats and kill penalties. Martinook has also been a key member of his teams both on and off the ice, especially when it comes to mentoring younger players and creating a cohesive team atmosphere. Martinook's returning to the Hurricanes’ roster ahead of 2024–25 gives Carolina a talented two-way winger who is bound to have a significant effect on the team's performance in the next season and beyond.
